An Intuitive Derivation of Heron's Formula

چکیده

From elementary geometry we learn that two triangles are congruent if their edges have the same lengths, so it should come as no surprise that the edge lengths of a triangle determine the area of that triangle. On the other hand, the explicit formula for the area of a triangle in terms of its edge lengths, named for Heron of Alexandria (although attributed to Archimedes [4]), seems to be less commonly remembered (as compared with, say, the formulas for the volume of a sphere or the area of a rectangle). One reason why Heron’s formula is so easily forgotten may be that proofs are usually presented as unwieldy verifications of an already known formula, rather than as expositions that derive a formula from scratch in a constructive and intuitive manner. Perhaps the derivation that follows, while not truly elementary, will render Heron’s formula more memorable for its symmetric and intuitive factorization. The first step of this derivation is to recall that the square of the area of a triangle is a polynomial in the edge lengths. More generally, suppose that T is a simplex in Rn with vertices x0, x1, . . . , xn , where x0 = 0, the origin. Let A denote the n × n matrix whose columns are given by the vectors x1, . . . , xn , and suppose that the xi are ordered so that A has positive determinant. The volume of T is then given by det(A) = n! V (T ), implying that

An elementary proof of the total progeny size of a birth-death process, with application to network component sizes

We revisit the size distribution of finite components in infinite Configuration Model networks. We provide an elementary combinatorial proof about the sizes of birth-death trees which is more intuitive than previous proofs. We use this to rederive the component size distribution for Configuration Model networks. Our derivation provides a more intuitive interpretation of the formula as contraste...

An automated tool for localization of heart sound components S1, S2, S3 and S4 in pulmonary sounds using Hilbert transform and Heron’s formula

ABSTRACT The primary problem with lung sound (LS) analysis is the interference of heart sound (HS) which tends to mask important LS features. The effect of heart sound is more at medium and high flow rate than that of low flow rate. Moreover, pathological HS obscures LS in a higher degree than normal HS. To get over this problem, several HS reduction techniques have been developed. An important...

Derivation and validation of a sensitivity formula for knife-edge slit gamma camera: A theoretical and Monte Carlo simulation study

Introduction: Gamma cameras are proposed for online range verification and treatment monitoring in proton therapy.  An Analytical formula was derived and validated for sensitivity of a slit collimator based on the photon fluence concept. Methods: Fluence formulation was generalized for photons distribution function and solved for high-energy point sources. The...

Is a 2000-Year-Old Formula Still Keeping Some Secrets?

For example, a = b = c = 1 defines an equilateral triangle and the formula gives Area = V3/4. However a = 3, b = c = 1 does not define a triangle, and the formula produces 4 45 This would have made perfect sense to the ancientsthere is no triangle, and there is no number. Today we know more: 4 1.677i is indeed a number, and that creates a problem. Does it mean that a = 3, b = c = 1 really does ...

Reflection above the barrier as tunneling in momentum space

a potential V (x), when the height of the potential exceeds the particle’s energy for a < x < b. Elementary derivations of this result can be found in most textbooks[1]. Quantum mechanics also predicts that a particle with energy E, greater than a barrier V (x) for all x, will reflect from the barrier. This can also be estimated using semiclassical methods. A derivation can be found in Landau a...
